This week sure has flown by!  And it has been so nice having Ronnie back home.  This week we got ready for our week long camping trip (we leave tomorrow!!!), got ready for Holly's birthday, had our last baseball games, and just had some down time as a family.

Blue Ribbon Babies

It's summertime!  The sun is out!!!  And my husband is HOME!!!!  I don't think that life can get any better than that.

So, his first day back on American soil, we took Ronnie to the fair to show him what the girls had entered.  And boy were we all in for a surprise!

Blue ribbons!  Red ribbons!!!  The girls cleaned up at the fair!  And they got to show off some of our busy work to their daddy.

We spent the day browsing the exhibits, riding rides, and eating some really good food!  But even more important was that we were a family again.  A whole family.

County Fair Time!

I don't know about you, but I LOVE the fair!  I love everything about going to a county fair -- the games, the people, the food, the crafts!  What's crazy is it never ever dawned on me that I could enter something IN the fair.  Seriously...  not a clue!

So, this crazy thought took seed a few weeks back when I shared a jar of our homemade preserves with a neighbor.  She asked if we had saved a jar for the fair.  I must have looked confused because she said that food preservation is a category anyone could enter.  I said, no way!  And off I went to research.

Turns out we have a whole lot of fun things we can enter in the fair.  The kids had some awesome artwork come home from school this year, Holly had a few Girl Scout projects, and they did the canning of the jam and apple butter.  Go figure, we can and will enter the fair this year!

Of course, it helps that the Thurston County Fair is being held the week right before Ronnie is due home.  Every little bit is helping to distract us...  Only two-ish more weeks.  *sigh!

UPDATE (7/27):  Here's a picture of our entries!!!  Artwork, Girl Scout badgework, and preserves.  Wish them luck.  We're going to check in on them the day after Ronnie gets home.

Bursts of Color

The leaves are falling, the leaves are falling!  Hopefully next year I will have my stuff together to go and photograph our beautiful foiliage...  we have an especially nice drive to the base.  But for now, here are some of the girls playing in the leaves.  So much fun!

Spoke Too Soon

Well, our streak of "nice" days has come to a screaming hault this week with 20 degree temps and cold winds.  *sigh*    But then we were rewarded just a little bit.  Big flakes started falling last night around 6 pm and this is what I woke up to this morning.

It has started to melt already and will all be gone by this afternoon, but what a pretty sight!   Of course, I don't have to stick around and see what the weather will do next.  The girls and I are off to Thailand tomorrow!!!!

Curiosity Doesn't Always Kill the Cat.....

Like I posted earlier, fall has definitely come to Korea.  The mornings are getting more and more crisp, the leaves are now in full color, and the days are getting shorter.  A few weeks ago, I was picking up some apples at the market when it dawned on me...  there were apples at the market!  Generally speaking, freshness is of utmost importance to the markets and they don't carry anything that isn't in season.

Later that night, in one of my daydream/random thought sessions, I was thinking that these apples have to be grown somewhere.  A few Google searches later landed me some information about apple farms and farm experiences.  After some more research I found out that there were farms in our immediate area, they offered apple picking, and they were going to have a festival!   SCORE!

We set out Saturday morning for Yesan-gun, an area south of us, with lots of friends in tow.  A little while later, we arrived at our destination.  The orchards here don't look like what you would picture in your mind.  Then again, the apple business didn't start flourishing until the mid-80s (from what I could gather on Google).

The festival was so much fun.  They had the Three Korean Tenors (and other entertainment), traditional Korean basket-making, and hands on apple activities.  The girls and I made pies, apple jam, and apple wine.  We watched them make fresh apple-infused sausage and then throw it on the grill to serve up.  We were treated to samples of apple wine and barbecue.  Last but not least, we headed for the orchard to pick our apples.  The day was just perfect and we had a fantastic time!

Falling Down

The leaves are that is, not me.

After our quick hop to the States in September, our temperatures have continued to drop.  We've gotten below freezing already and morning frost is starting to be a daily occurance.

Watching the leaves change is another reminder that I've been here a year already.  I was amazed at the color last year, and this year I'm getting to appreciate the subtleties.  Oaks versus maples, azaleas versus cherries still on the trees.   Here are my my favorites of what I've seen thus far.

They look like butterflies to me

Yes I put a filter on this, but the bright red fruit on the otherwise sparce tree caught my eye

Random Musing..... Springtime

It is just beautiful here right now. The temps are in the 70s, with the occasional fall back due to a weather system. Unfortunately the cherry blossoms have calmed down, but they have been replaced! The azaleas are in full bloom and most of the trees have gotten their new leaves. It's a real pleasure to see after the harsh winter we had.

Bloomin' Fun

Spring is slowly arriving to the Korean peninsula. So slow that we still have temperature dips below freezing, but nice enough that there are signs of Spring all over. The girls and I have been snapping pictures of flowers and sprouts while enjoying the warmer weather. Granted warmer means high 50s, low 60s, but that's much better than the 20s we were having.

Korea has an abundance of flowering trees. Pleasing to the eye, not so pleasing to my sinuses. Currently we have apricot blossoms, azaleas, cherry blossoms, forsythia, and magnolias in bloom. I'll add more pics as I take them this week. It's Spring Break and we're bound and determined to not be at the house much.

Hope you enjoy the sights!

It's a RECORD!

Leave it to us to have yet another 100 year record under our belts. Before I explain, let me backtrack.

The first year we were in Texas, there was 100 days of 100+ heat, beating a record set 25 years prior. The next year, the 100 year flood record was washed away (insert groan) by 20 ft! Now we're in South Korea, which has seen it's one day record snowfall total blown away in one day. WOW!

I'll tell ya, we had fun with it though. School was cancelled for the day and Ronnie got home early. So we ventured out to play in the snow. We had a BLAST! We made snow angels, threw some snow balls, made a towering snowman and found a great sledding hill by the house.

Let it flurry!!!!

We woke up on Sunday morning to the first snow flurries of the season! The girls were so excited, so we ran downstairs as quick as we could get warm clothes on. It wasn't cold enough to stick around long, but there were some big beautiful flakes coming down.

Not sticking much, but there are some flurries on the car

Fall Foliage

So as the leaves are turning around our apartment, I see exactly what I've been missing all these years. As someone pointed out to me, we are real Southerners. Being from Florida, our leaves pretty much just turn yellow and fall off the trees over the course of a week. Not that I would trade sunbathing at Christmas while talking to my relatives in Seattle, but seeing the season change has been a real treat for us.

The farthest north we've ever lived was North Carolina. Arizona, Oklahoma and Texas don't really jump out at you for being fall foliage destinations. So here are some pics from around town.... I'll add more as the leaves get more and more vibrant.
Enjoy!
