The Year in Review - 2012

Christmas 2012

Merry Christmas from the land where almost all the trees are Christmas trees!!!  Buckle in, ‘cause if you know our family, you know you’re in for a ride.

We started our year out buried by a few feet of snow…  Lovingly referred to as Snowmageddon.  Typically, the Seattle area doesn’t see snow on the epic proportion that we had.  We spent a week playing in the white stuff, watching our power go off, praying that it comes back on, and just having fun while stuck in/near the house.

Sight Seeing  You know we couldn’t just sit still this year….  We visited the sites in Seattle (Pike’s Place, the Seaquarium, and the Space Needle), went skiing at Crystal Mountain, spent some time in the San Juan Islands (and saw an Orca pod), and went out to the beach.  The Oliver’s came to visit us over the summer and we took them on a ferry ride, to drive around Mount Rainier National Park, and to see Mount St. Helen’s.  We just didn’t stay in Washington though….  Our big vacation this year was a week in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.  This is where Ronnie and I wanted to go on our honeymoon, but just couldn’t make it happen. We snorkeled, went to Hotel California (don’t worry, we didn’t check in), and just lounged by the pool.  In September, the girls and I joined Ronnie in Tucson (he was there training) for a long weekend.  We got to visit with friends and lounge by the pool in the warm, warm sun.

Growing Too Quick  The girls continue to ignore my directive that they are NOT allowed to grow up.  Holly is 8 years old and is in the 3rd grade.  Sarah is 6 years old and is in Kindergarten.  They are both actively involved with Girl Scouts and are just simply amazing… they love to learn new things, try new things, and play in the dirt while wearing skirts.

Other tidbits  If you haven’t heard, Ronnie is currently deployed to Afghanistan. Please keep him and his Airmen in your thoughts and prayers as they fulfill their mission.  This is the first deployment the girls have actively experienced and, though they are doing well, they miss their daddy something fierce.

If not trying to be mom and dad is hard enough, I am almost finished with my Master’s degree.  While I’m finishing my degree, I am working part-time at the McChord Education Office doing the same thing I did at Osan.

So there you have it!  2012 has been a fun-filled, rewarding year.  I have been trying to keep up with the blog as we adventure our way through the Pacific Northwest – we’re at randcoliver.blogspot.com.

We hope this finds you all happy and healthy.  Have a wonderful new year! And don’t forget to look us up if you are ever in the area.

Love,

Chris, Ronnie, Holly, Sarah and Cleo the Cat

Christmas 2012

It's been hard getting into the Christmas spirit this year with Ronnie being gone.  From putting up the tree to getting gifts shopped for and even planning our Christmas dinner... something (someone) big is missing.

But, boy am I one lucky girl... My mom and dad came to visit and lift our spirits.  And we are stationed near family.  So while that one big piece of our life was missing, I had a whole bunch of family trying to fill that void.

The weekend before Christmas, we had a family dinner with my grandma, aunts and uncles, and cousins.  Murphy tried his best to deter us from getting there (the tire story is whole other post)... but got there we did and we walked into warm embraces and lots of cheer.

My parents had to go home the next day, so we had a eve of Christmas Eve barbecue at my aunt's house.  And I won the prize for my ability to cook -- my great-grandma's bean crock!!!!  Oh man, this crock is soooooo cool!  It has taken it's place among my treasured items.

Christmas Eve was finally upon us.  We started our day baking some cookies for Santa.  After we were done baking, we picked up some friends and headed to Charlie's Safari for some indoor playtime.

While I was at my aunt's house for the barbecue, she made me promise to come back for Christmas Eve.  We always have such a great time, so that was an easy promise to make and keep.  But before we left, we got to Skype with Ronnie and opened some presents with him.  We decided it would be easier (and have more bandwidth) if we did it Christmas Eve rather than Christmas morning.  We had a nice long chat, but finally it was time for him to go to work (yes, he worked on Christmas).

As usual, we had a great time with my family for Christmas Eve!  Lots of kids, lots of noise, lots of presents, lots of fun!!!!

 Cousins version 1.0 and 2.0

Christmas morning was upon us and it was time to clean out the rest of the gifts under the tree.

Even Cleo the cat got in on the holiday spirit...  she gave a big present to Holly!

Oh, how Mrs. Burris is loved and revered in our home!!!  Still to this day, all of Holly's (and Sarah's) teachers have to jump the hurdle that she set.  Thank you, Heather, for loving my babies and pouring yourself into them.

First Snow!

Look what we woke up to this morning

School was delayed 2 hours so the roads could clear up a bit.  Which means we had time to play.  The girls made some snowballs and a snow angel or two.

Celebrate

Twelve years ago, Ronnie and I started this crazy journey together. This year, I celebrated with my girls the best way I knew how...  We started our day with worship and fellowship by going to the Women's Holiday Brunch at our church.  Amazing food and amazing women!

Next, we met up with Holly's Girl Scout troop and did one of our family traditions: we went to the Nutcracker.  This year, we took in the local performance in Olympia.  Even more fun is the fact that one of Holly's friends is a dancer in the production.

After the ballet, we headed for dinner and then back to church for the Christmas pageant.  The kids had worked really hard for the last few weeks to be ready and their hard work showed!

We finally got home late...  but to a surprise from my sweet husband.  The man who doesn't ever send flowers had sent me the most beautiful bouquet of roses.

Blessed!

We've made it through November....  I guess I should explain.

On November 1st, I woke up with knots in the pit in my stomach.  I wasn't ready for November to already be here, and really just wanted to stay under the covers and let it pass me by.  For as happy as I seem to be on the exterior, I can swing just as dark.  I got out of bed and was in a foul mood.  I have a policy of "fake it until you feel it" when I feel gloomy.  It just wasn't working that day.  November had come and it was sinking on me like a wet blanket.

I pushed through and started my day.  As usual, I checked Facebook to see what was going on in the world.   And I am so glad I did...  a few of my friends had started the month of thankfulness.  This was just a commitment to be thankful or grateful for at least one thing each day of November.  I decided right then and there that I would turn the first dark thought into a positive one.  Just an exercise in looking for the silver lining, which I was having a hard time doing or finding.

That first day, I searched and searched for something to be thankful for.  It was hard because the weather was matching my mood - drizzly, grey, cold, overcast.  But then, the clouds parted just a bit... and beautiful blue sky peeked through with a few rays of sunshine.  On my way to the gym, the sun peeked out again.  Amazing that it lifted my mood.   And I had my first thing to be thankful for.

The first week was tough getting through, but I kept on. And with anything, it was easier to count my blessings as I kept exercising the "thankfulness muscle."  I kept getting out of bed, kept putting one foot in front of the other, and consciously choosing to focus on the good.  By the middle of the month, I felt completely overwhelmed by the goodness that was in my life...  and it was hard to just pick one thing to call out on Facebook.

So, here I am on December 1st.  I made it through November and avoided the depression that was lurking and threatening to consume me.  And I truly feel blessed for all the good in my life.

I thought I would share my list with the blogosphere...  in case you missed it on Facebook with just a little back story on a few of them.

1. I am thankful for the peeks of sunshine and blue sky I saw today, because sometimes it is the little things in life.

2. I am thankful for joints that creak and ache in areas that I hurt back in the day... They remind me of all the fun I had growing up. (The run I had on the 1st was punishing - I pushed hard and felt it the next day).

3. I am thankful to live in a country where freedom of speech is upheld and the media, while biased at times, is not censored on a large-scale as it is in other countries. (the information about the media holding/ deleting info on Benghazi came out)

4. For each new morning with its light, For rest and shelter of the night, For health and food, For love and friends, For everything Thy goodness sends. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson  (We had Thanksgiving early at our house)

5. I am thankful for wonderful friends who make me ♪ happy when skies are gray ♪ . You know who you are... and I am so glad you are in my life (as crazy as it is).  (I had a wonderful conversation with a dear friend...  it made me realize how many people I have in my life who love me for me and how much I love them right back.)

6. I am thankful for: The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. (Election Day)

7. I am thankful to be blessed with a wonderful husband and baby daddy. I love you, Ron Oliver!  (We dropped Ronnie off for his deployment)

8. Today, I am thankful for Things 1 and 2. I cannot imagine where I would be if I didn't have my sweet little girls in my life. Life is so much more colorful and happy with them in it.  (It was one of those "hurry up, the bus is coming. No you can't wear that.  What do you mean you don't have money in your lunch account?" mornings)

9. I am thankful that my mom is within driving distance. It has been a long week and I needed a hug.

10. I am so very thankful for my parents, who are celebrating their anniversary today. They raised me up right by teaching me some hard lessons about life and letting me learn others on my own. But never was there a doubt that they were in my corner --EVER!!! Even today, it's hard to beat a "that's my girl" from my mom and dad. I love y'all -- Happy Anniversary!!!!!

11. "On that day let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain.” - Dwight D. Eisenhower, “Veterans Day, 1954,” Proclamation 3071 (Veteran's Day)

12. I am thankful to have family surrounding me. We are stationed at that extremely rare assignment where we are within an hour from my aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandma, and my children get to grow up knowing all of them. What a blessing!  (Had a great weekend with my family)

13. I am thankful for our community. We have fantastic neighbors, an excellent school (with super fantastic people who go there), and a wonderful church home. We seriously hit the jackpot when we were assigned here. (I have been stopped in church, at school, at work, and in the neighborhood with people asking how I was, if Ronnie made it to Afghanistan, and offers of help anytime I need)

14. I am thankful for my bed... Yep, that's what I got today zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz  (It had been a long day and I felt a migraine coming)

15. I am thankful for our military family. For everyone who has shared a meal with us at holidays, birthdays, PCS's, and plain just becauses - thank you for helping those places that are so far away feel just like home.

16. I am thankful for our family fun night tradition. Just fun to reconnect as a family after the go-go-go of the week.  (We had family fun night with my mom.  Had a kid-directed dinner, watched a family friendly movie, and just had a TON of fun).

17. I am thankful to be rid of this nagging migraine. It put a crimp in my run today, but I still finished the 5 miles. Here's to hoping it's gone for good....

18. I am thankful for technology, as it makes a long distance seem like just around the corner. This morning, the girls woke up to a text from their daddy... It just makes the day start off right. We love and miss you!  (YEAH DADDY! is really all the start you need for the day, isn't it?)

19. I am thankful for rain... Up this way, it means there is SNOW in the mountains!!!!  (Crystal Mountain is getting close to opening; meaning ski season is coming!)

20. I am thankful to have talked with my husband this morning. It was short and sweet, but the time was all my own as the girls were already on the bus. Exactly what I needed to start my day... And yes, honey, I owned that mid-term.

21. I am thankful that I didn't have to travel more than my normal commute today. All you crazy people traveling today, I hope you get where you're going safe and sound.

22. "It is therefore recommended... to set apart Thursday the eighteenth day of December next, for solemn thanksgiving and praise, that with one heart and one voice the good people may express the grateful feelings of their hearts and consecrate themselves to the service of their divine benefactor." ~ Samuel Adams, the first Thanksgiving Day Proclamation

23. I am thankful to be the mother of two children with giving spirits and kind hearts. They are going through their toys and choosing what to donate.. There have been no tears or tantrums, just a kindhearted: I really think someone else will enjoy this, mommy. So proud of them!

24. I am thankful for the weather to be holding out for the race. Overcast, cold, but no rain.

25. I am thankful to have been healthy enough to complete my first half marathon.

26. I am thankful for my sweet cousin, Emily Angevine. This morning, I got out of bed and my legs just ache... Thank you for watching the girls while I went off and ran the half!!!! The girls and I love you beyond measure. Hope you have a great week, blow your finals out of the water, and get home soon so we can play again.

27. Today, I am thankful for Epsom salts, NSAIDs, and Tiger Balm. (Day 2 after the race... still sore but managing).

28. As I wrap up the month of Thankfulness I would be remiss if I didn't add in something about forgiveness. I am thankful that I have been forgiven by others as well as have forgiven others myself! Who knows where I would be if I didn't receive the gift of forgiveness from my friends. Thank you for the reminder, Mel! "You're not punishing others when you get angry with them, you're actually punish yourself. And the longer you stay mad at them, the longer you have to live with that toxicity. And remember, especially during this holiday season: when you forgive someone for something they've done, you're not doing THEM a favor; you're liberating yourself. So give yourself the greatest gift anyone could ask for: forgiveness. 'To really love we must learn how to forgive' -Mother Teresa"

29. I am thankful for the gift of time. There have been so many people who have given me their time and have helped shaped me into what/who I am today. I cannot thank them enough for the valuable present they have given me. (I am breezing through my Master's program and have something to say.  A lot of it revolves around people who have taught me lessons or have mentored me along the way.  It got me to thinking about all those who have poured a little bit of themselves in me.  From teachers, to coworkers and supervisors, to friends -- I have a lot of little voices in my head and am thankful for them being there.)

30. I am thankful for lazy, rainy Friday Fun nights with my girls. And for getting to Skype with Ronnie in the middle of it.

Finished

And just like that, the half marathon distance is checked off the bucket list.  Hallelujah!  I've had this distance on and off my radar for a few years now.  And finally -- FINALLY -- it is done!

First and foremost, running half's are not for the faint of heart.  It has taken discipline, organization, and plain old fashioned pig-headedness to get through the training plan.  I can't tell you how many times I just wanted to say screw it and flush the plan.  Luckily, Ronnie was here to encourage me.  Even after he left, we would chat about how my running was going.  Which leads me to point two, it does take a team.  I had questions, hiccups, and frustrations.  It was nice to have another runner in the house and among my friends helping me along the way.  My wonderful cousin, Emily, met us in Seattle to watch the girls for me while I ran the race.

Now to answer the why...  At Thanksgiving, people asked me Why? when I mentioned to a few people that I was running this race.  Well, besides the whole I'm a runner thing...  Running is the cheapest form of therapy.  I can't tell you how many runs I was on when my brain was processing things...  husband deploying sorts of things... and I would choke back tears.  Sometimes, I would have to stop and sob.  But eventually, I would chose to start running again.

Now, isn't that a life lesson?  The choice to stop, deal with the emotion, and then continue on is something we all contend with from time to time.  Here it was, smacking me in the face.  I found that I could finish a 10 mile long run and work through my emotions during it and be a better, if not more tired, mommy on the other side.

So, last weekend was my BIG race.  It started at the crack of dawn (UGH!) but the forecast looked promising: the high was in the mid-40s and no rain (YAY!)

On Sunday, the alarm went off at o'dark thirty and, after breakfast, I met up with my friend Liz and headed for the start line.

The start line was all abuzz with excitement and energy.  Before I knew it, it was time for us to start running!  Liz is a faster runner than I am but we wanted to start the race together.  Eventually, I called mercy and a walk break and she went on.

It was a really lovely day for a run.  The fog was hanging in the air, but it kept the humidity in and warmed me a bit.  We ran by the Smith Tower, down I-90, and along Lake Washington.

When we got to Madrona, the crowds had come out to start cheering.  And just in time too -- it was the half-way point.  And all uphill from there (YIKES)

We climbed and climbed.  We went through the Washington Arboretum into Interlaken Park.  The climb was brutal but boy was it a pretty view!  Finally, I reached the 10 mile point.

The route wound back around Capital Hill and finally I got a view of Lake Union and the Space Needle.  I kept on trucking...  A little past mile 12, the first marathoner lapped me.  Right before mile 13, the second marathoner lapped me.  But the best was finding my cheering crew at mile 13 -- Emily brought the girls out for a "Go Mommy" and sweaty hugs and kisses.

I crossed the finish line with an official time of 3:14:13 - definitely slower than what I was wanting.  But here's the great thing, it's my Personal Best :)   That's winning right there!!!

Now, I'm looking forward to Half #2 - Disney is calling my name.

"A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins With a Single Step"

The first step I took feels like so long ago....  and tomorrow I'm participating in my first Half Marathon.
It all started in April, when my friend asked me if I wanted to do the Nike Women's Marathon with her (You can read that first post here).  We wound up not getting in, but by the time we knew that, the goal of 13.1 was already in my head.  I thought about doing one sooner than the October race and looked at some other races around the area.  Eventually, I set my sights on the Seattle Marathon:  It will be a very hilly 13.1 through downtown Seattle. If you've ever been here, the course starts at Seattle Center, heads down 5th, along Lake Washington, and through Madrona and Capital Hill.

And here I am...  I've logged 145 miles to be ready-ish.  There have been a lot of hiccups along the way from old injuries -- I've had a twisted knee (not from running) and some hip tenderness (definitely from pushing up hills).  That twisted knee was just a few weeks ago and has set me back; now, I'll be walking most of the half tomorrow rather than running.  But the point is that it will get done: it won't be pretty and it certainly won't be fast, but I am going to get that finisher's medal.

Day Zero

I'm numb.

This day seemed so far away when we moved here last year.  Even this summer when we had our family time.  But, as time always does, it caught us quick.  Ronnie left today.

We woke up at 2 am to drive him into the squadron and drop him off.  The sky was clear and the stars were bright.  Especially Jupiter.  It was high and bright and stable.  Eventually, after our last hugs and last kisses, the girls and I left him to join his guys for the next 9 months.  We got back home and crawled into bed.

Before I fell back asleep, part of me prayed there would be a call saying "nevermind, we're going to catch next week's flight" or "hey, the war's over and we don't have to go."  The more rational part of me prayed for their safe travel and for Him to watch over them and bring them home safe and sound.  At some point, I fell asleep.

The alarm went off as usual at 6:30.  I knew I had to get myself together enough to get the girls fed, dressed, and off to school.  Even though I didn't feel like it.  I wanted to hide under the covers.  I remember thinking that maybe if I hid long enough, he would come home sooner.  Instead I drug myself to the coffee pot for a jolt of energy and headed upstairs to get the girls, with a smile affixed to my face.

They got off on the bus and I climbed back into bed...  And then the tears came.  The ugly, body-shaking, soul wrenching kind of tears.  The ones that you can only let fall when you know no one is looking because you are so vulnerable in that moment.  The ones that you let fall when you also know that one person is right there to comfort you.  Except he wasn't.  He was heading to catch a plane that was going to take him 7,000 miles away from us.

I decided to allow myself to wallow until there were double digits on the clock.  I made a deal with myself, the big girl panties went on at 10 am.  There was homework to do, parent-teacher conferences to attend, miles to run, and grocery shopping to be done.  This house won't run itself, papers don't write themselves, and the food and laundry fairies haven't been around for a long time.  And so I did...

Day Zero has now come to a close.  The girls are bathed and in bed.  And I'm sitting here alone on the couch.  Tomorrow will be better, and the next day will be better than tomorrow, and so on and so on. Day 275 can't get here soon enough.

October Round-up

I can't believe November is already here.  Our October was fast and furious.  It started off with this

We bought a pop-up camper!!!!  I had one growing up and it was always a lot of fun.  We figured up this way, you need more than a blue tarp to keep you dry and warm.  I can't wait until next year when we get to take it out as a family and break it in properly.

The next weekend, this happened:

The annual father-daughter dance at the girls' school.  They got all dolled up and went out dancing for the night, leaving mommy at home.

Then this....

We had a test drive of the emergency card information at school.  Somehow, Holly managed to shut her middle finger in a door.  The bone is broken and she had to have a few stitches, but other than that, she's doing well.  We have some rehab on our hands as soon as it heals up, but the docs at Madigan were really great.  Of course, Ronnie was no where near home when this happened, he had taken off to hike up Mt. Rainier.  Like I said, it was a test to see if I can handle all this on my own.
