First Day of School

Well, summer is over!  Time for school to start.  This year, both girls will be in school-school.  Can you believe it?!?!?

Holly is now a 3rd grader.  This was her getting on the bus for her first day of school.  When she got there, her best friend Abigail was waiting (her mom texted me the photo)!!!  Oh, how I love these two!!!!

Sarah is finally starting Kindergarten.  Sarah's first day was the "second" day of school for Holly.  But she was no less cute.

I can already tell, we're going to have a great year.  They both couldn't stop talking about their classrooms and friends and teachers.  I can only hope this enthusiasm lasts for the whole year.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

When Ronnie and I were planning our wedding and honeymoon, one of the locations I wanted to visit was Cabo.  The pictures of the Arch and the teal blue water had always caught my eye as something I absolutely HAD to see in real life.  Well, reality set in and we didn't go to Cabo for our honeymoon.  So, on the bucket list it went.

Finally, I can say we've done it!

Last week, we set off for Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for a week long trip.  After getting shuffled through customs, hitting the grocery, and checking in, we headed straight for the pool and beach.  And with views like this, could you blame us?

The water was warm, the drinks were cold, and there was hardly anyone around.  It was like we had the hotel all to ourselves!

As much as I just wanted to sit and soak up the sun, we couldn't pass up an opportunity to go explore.  First up, downtown Cabo San Lucas.  We hopped on the local bus and headed for downtown.  We got lunch at El Squid Roe, complete with fresh made at the table guacamole, walked around the market place and harbor, and perused the stores.   Eventually, the pool was calling us back, so we hopped the bus back to the hotel

We hung out at the pool and headed down to the beach.  Luckily for us, there were baby sea turtles hatching!!!!  How amazing it was to see.

When we got back to the hotel room, there was a message on our phone updating us about a tropical storm in the area.  What's this you say, a tropical storm?  Well of course there's a tropical storm...  we did bring Holly with us didn't we???

That's right. Hurricane Ileana popped up out of nowhere - this is after the Hurricane Center said it wasn't going to do much of anything.  That would be Hurricane Holly's doing.  In the future, I think we shall send our travel plans to them so they can pull together a better forecast.  *sigh!

So, we retooled the rest of our itinerary to be sure that we got everything we wanted to do done.  And with the help of our wonderful concierge, everything fell into place.

The next day we spent lounging around the pool, with me catching up on homework (yes, Grad school will travel!), Ronnie reading and sunbathing, and the girls playing in the Kid's Club.  Eventually, I looked up and there it was....

Yep, that there is a storm.  But the hotel was awesome!  They added in more activities for the kid and opened up one of the big rooms and set up an area where adults could stay and play Wii and X-Box with them.  Seriously, the Hilton did a GREAT job!

We woke up Thursday with most of the rains out of the area.  And finally got to do one of the activities I was looking forward to.  After breakfast, we got a rental car and headed out of town for the day.  Our destination: Todos Santos.  You see, there's this great song by the Eagles "Hotel California."  Todos Santos is home to the legendary Baja California Hotel California.  Best of all, it's a quiet mission town.  We had a great time just exploring the shops, walking the streets, and enjoying a snack at the bar in Hotel California.

We got a jump on the next day, since we had the rental until 12 noon.  I really wanted to get some cool Mexican souvenirs and drive the coast a bit.  We headed to the blown glass factory and picked out a new margarita pitcher and some shot glasses.  On the way back we drove up the coast to San Jose Del Cabo.  Driving the coast is just gorgeous!

After our drive, it was time to head out on our trip to the Arch.!  We had seen it in the distance a few times during the week.  I can tell you, the pictures do not do it justice!!!!  We had schedule a boat to take us to the Arch and then to a beach so we could relax and do some snorkling.  It was an amazing day on the beach.

Holly and Elijah, Sanford, North Carolina, June 2005

Oh I just LOVE this picture!!!!  But first, I need to tell a story:

In case you don't know, I grew up in Jacksonville, Florida and went to a small catholic school until 8th grade.   I had known most of the kids who were in my 8th grade class since 1st grade.  One of my best friends was Alison.  She and I played the same sports, were in Girl Scouts, and giggled about boys.  After 8th grade, we all went our separate ways as we went to separate high schools, still kind of keeping in touch, but not like we had.  Then I went off to college, got married, and started this crazy Air Force life that we lead.

Eventually, that Air Force life lead Ronnie and I to move to Pope AFB, NC.  I had gotten a job in Sanford working for Moen (yes, the faucet Moen).  One day, we decided to head up to Applebees and take a little longer lunch.

So there I was - sitting in Applebees - in Sanford, North Carolina - population 20,000 - when I see this woman across the restaurant.  Our eyes met.  I excused myself from the table and she did the same.  We met in front of the waitress stand.  As we looked at each other in disbelief, I remember saying, "I think I know you."   She said, "Yes, I think so."  I said, "Alison?"  She said, "Chris?"  (Insert girl squealing and jumping up and down here.....)  One of my best friends growing up was right there in Sanford all this time!

This picture was taken as we had a playdate with Alison and her boys.  Even more amazing, Holly and Elijah were born not even a week apart!!!

I have since reconnected with the rest of my St. Matt's girls, and it is absolutely amazing that here we are, we're adults, have careers, and children, and we still all giggle like we used to at our slumber parties. This just goes to show that true friendships will stand the test of time and distance.

Wild Thorn Berries

Last year when we visited our next home, Ronnie commented that there seemed to be a lot of bramble bushes around.  I corrected him and told him they were wild blackberry bushes.  Needless to say, he's been "waiting patiently" for the berries to ripen this year.  Every day, I would get a report on how the bushes were busting with green berries, where the best patches were, etc.  After his run today, he announced that it was time to pick some berries.

After dinner tonight, he and the girls headed down the street with buckets in hand, ready to harvest.

They came back with a good bit of berries.  We sorted them, put some in the fridge for eating, Ronnie made some freezer jam, and put the rest up in the freezer for later.

Garden Update

Summer is in full swing around these parts.  And we are enjoying our backyard garden!   Here's what it looked like this morning... and our little harvest of cucumbers and carrots!
